All questions on the exam relate to the competencies outlined in the book Sports Physical Therapy: Description of Specialty Practice (DSP).
The board-certified sports physical therapy specialist examination is based on 6 major competency areas. Each competency area was subdivided into specific objectives in Chapter 2 of the DSP. The percentage of the exam devoted to each of these areas is outlined below. These percentages were based on a survey of APTA’s Sports Physical Therapy Section and on the opinions of a group of subject matter experts. Each question in the item bank is categorized according to the competency area, and when the test is constructed the question distribution on the exam approximately reflects these percentages.
A. Rehabilitation and Return to Sports: 1. Examination, Evaluation, and Diagnosis (20%) 2. Prognosis, Interventions, and Outcomes (20%)
B. Acute Injury/Illness Management (15%)
C. Medical/Surgical Conditions (15%)
D. Injury Prevention (15%)
E. Sports Performance Enhancement (10%)
F. Professional Roles and Responsibilities (5%)
